Benefits and Risks of Soda Water (Carbonated Drinks)

Healthints – At present, very many people are questioning the benefits and risks of soda water (carbonated drinks). Is it true that soda water is safe for health? or even the opposite is it bad if we consume it? Before discussing further, it’s good to know first what carbonated drink is?

Soda water (Carbonated Drinks), literally interpreted as beverages that do not contain alcohol, which undergoes carbonation. Carbonated drinks have several famous names that vary, for example, in the United States, known as soda, soda pop, pop or tonic, in England known as fizzy drinks, in Canada, it is known as Soda or Pop. Whereas in Ireland, they call it Minerals.

What is Soda?

Soda water has the chemical formula H2CO3. An essential component for making soda water is water and carbon dioxide gas. The process is by dissolving carbon dioxide (CO2) gas into the liquid. When injected into the high-pressure water, carbon dioxide will form carbonic acid. That is why these drinks are called carbonated beverages. It is this carbonic acid that causes the appearance of a typical touch of soda in the mouth (mouthfeel) and the feeling of bite when taken.

Carbonation occurs when the CO2 gas is fully water-soluble. This process will result in a sensation of carbonation  “Fizz ” in carbonated water and sparkling mineral water. It is followed by foaming decay on soda drinks, which is none other than the process of releasing dissolved CO2 in water. Judging from the raw material and the process of making carbonated drinks has no alcohol content.

Carbonated drinks do not include nutrient-dense beverages. However, the use of sugar makes this drink a contributor to the energy needed by the body. Also, the addition of certain ingredients contributes to minerals that are beneficial to the body.

Interestingly, those who are on a low-calorie diet can choose low-energy carbonated drinks. This drink uses synthetic sweetener as a sugar substitute. Meanwhile, energy consumption in one day on average reaches 2,300 – 3,800 kcal, depending on age and number of activities. A can of 240 ml soft drink contains about 100 kcal of energy. This energy content causes soft drinks to have a stimulating effect after doing physical work or after exercising.

Is it right diet soda helps you lose weight?

Diet soda is a carbonated beverage that contains few calories. That is why diet soda is more beneficial than regular soda. Because of the low-calorie content, people assume that this soda does not cause weight gain, like other soda.

But the fact that people who consume diet soda can lose weight more (6 kg) than people who do not destroy it (only 4 kg) in 12 weeks. Explanations from researchers, people who drink soda, can cope more with behavioral changes during the diet as an effort to lose weight.

But another study opposed the study. Instead, mentioned the contrary that the soda diet could potentially increase weight and risk of certain diseases. Although it contains lower calories, diet soda still contains artificial sweeteners. It can cause gain weight.

Many studies reveal artificial sweeteners associated with increased appetite. The study by Purdue University proved that artificial sweetener could disrupt the body’s natural ability to regulate calories. Artificial sweeteners in diet soda can confuse the body. The effect is that the body loses the ability to recognize energy in the sweet liquid in your body. So, even though you have gotten sugar, your body has not received enough calories. Therefore it causes you to increase appetite and eventually gain weight.

Another study that followed by more than 5000 adults for 7-8 years also proved that soda could cause weight gain. The more you consume diet soda, the higher your weight gain by the participants in the study.

According to some studies, drinking soda has been shown to cause an epidemic of obesity in the US. Here are the four most damaging facts when drinking soda:

1. Not only fattening the body, but also organs

Researchers from Denmark researched and found that drinking non-diet soda increased levels of fat. In a study, participants consumed soda, milk, diet cola, or water every day for six months. After six months, the results showed that people who drank soda experienced a dramatic increase in unhealthy hidden fat (liver and bone fat).

Cholesterol levels also increased by 11 percent compared to other groups. According to research, drinking diet soda is also not good for your health. All soda varieties contain sweeteners and food coloring. The ingredients are related to the causes of hyperactivity and brain cell damage. People who regularly drink soda have a higher risk of developing diabetes.

2. Contains toxic substances

One ingredient of soda is flame retardant, a fire suppression chemical used in thermosets, thermoplastics, textiles, coatings, and some soda drinks that you like to drink. This ingredient is registered as BVO (Brominated Vegetable Oil) and serves to prevent the artificial flavor from being separated from the liquid as a whole. This ingredient can cause bromide poisoning, which causes memory loss, nerve disorders, and abnormal changes in the skin.

3. Will turn you into a laboratory mouse

Lovely corn syrup is used to sweeten many American soda brands. This human-made material is dangerous because it comes from genetically engineered corn. People do not know the long-term effects that will occur in humans. New research tends to agree that genetic engineering causes an increase in the aging process, digestive tract damage, and infertility.

4. Causes bone loss and tooth decay

A meta-analysis of about 90 studies shows that many people who like to drink soda stop consuming milk. Decreasing milk consumption is not a good sign. In the 1950s, for every one glass of sugary drinks, a child drank 3 cups of milk. Now it’s the opposite. Not surprisingly, 44 million Americans currently have osteoporosis.

The Content of Soda Water (Carbonated Drinks)

Consuming too much soda is also not good for teeth. High concentrations of glucose, sucrose, fructose, and sugar cause tooth decay. Some time ago, Coca-Cola in the United States agreed that their soda would reduce raw materials that are thought to trigger cancer. Coca-Cola in America is said to be a little healthier than Coca-Cola in other parts of the country.

Even though the public never revealed Cola-Cola raw materials, at least the researchers tried to detect what content in this soft drink and they found:

1. Dyes (which are thought to trigger cancer)

The name dye on Coca-Cola is called 4-methylimidazole (4-MI), a compound that is believed to trigger the disease. Although Coca-Cola insists their production drinks are safe because the content of 4-MI is not dangerous various studies have proven otherwise.

2. Caffeine

In a can of Coca-Cola, there is at least 40 mg of caffeine. That is half the level of caffeine in a cup of tea and the third cup of coffee. Caffeine makes heart rate faster and increases high blood pressure. Caffeine also causes the body to stop absorbing iron from food. So soda lovers usually suffer from iron deficiency.

3. Sugar

Both the usual Coca-Cola, zero sugar, and the type of diet, all still contain sugar. Most sugars usually trigger obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, and also strokes. Sugar in Coca-Cola is also quickly absorbed by the body, which makes the drinker easily tired and increases the desire to eat more sweet foods.

4. Phosphoric Acid

Phosphoric acid is an odorless compound that gives flavor to Coca-Cola. This phosphoric acid is usually effective in removing rust on iron. The most phosphoric acid will damage the kidneys and weaken the bones. How terrible?

5. Citric Acid

Citric acid is usually present in oranges or grapefruit. This sour taste can damage teeth if consumed in excess. Research in the journal General Dentistry states that Coca-Cola is ten times damaging to teeth than oranges.

6. Bisphenol A

Almost everyone knows about bisphenol A. These compounds are usually present in baby bottles, plastic cutlery, CD places, including Coca-Cola cans. Bisphenol A is similar to estrogen so it can damage the body’s balance. Many studies have mentioned that bisphenol A can trigger cancer, liver damage, obesity, diabetes, and infertility problems.

In conclusion, consuming a limited amount of soda is relatively safe because the levels of artificial sweeteners are not harmful to health. But this drink is also not a good drink to consume every day. Mineral water, sugar-free tea, or low-fat milk, are far better than soft drinks.
